“Vienna cannot maintain its top position in the music world without intensive efforts to promote young talent. That’s why your initiative is so important.”
Clemens Hagen
Cellist at Mozarteum, Salzburg
“Back then, I was the first young musician to have the opportunity to perform in the Schubert Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus, and I still remember how excited and proud I was. It would be nice if this tradition were to continue, and this kind of support were to benefit as many more young musicians as possible.”

“I have fond memories of the time when my collaboration with “Musica Juventutis” began. It was in the summer of 1995. I had said goodbye to my former field of work at the ORF regional studio in Vorarlberg and joined the main music department at the Vienna broadcasting center in Argentinierstraße. At that time, Dr. Andrea Seebohm was the head of the department, and she was also a member of the board of the association “Musica Juventutis,” which Dr. Norbert Brunner, a member of the board of directors of the Wiener Konzerthaus, had founded in 1983 and since then had also served as its secretary general. Andrea Seebohm, however, had no real contact person for Norbert Brunner at the ORF. Of course, she knew exactly my previous work for Ö1, so she thought she had found him. I was briefly instructed, and a few days later Dr. Brunner visited me at the Funkhaus. The conversation had only just begun, and already we were one heart and soul. Or to put it another way: Norbert Brunner was preaching to the choir. After all, presenting and promoting young musicians had always been one of my main ambitions in radio work. From then on, I supervised the concerts of Musica Juventutis both as an editor and as a recording supervisor, and I also had the appropriate broadcasting slot on Ö1: the music magazine “Intrada” on Friday mornings, which I had “invented” in 1993.
Norbert Brunner was a full-time dermatology specialist, but he was also a trained singer. And he could proudly say that he had been a student of the legendary bass-baritone Alfred Jerger (1889-1976). Brunner led “Musica Juventutis” in the style of an artistic director. He attentively followed the jury meetings in which those were selected who were to perform at the concerts in the Schubert Hall. And in this context, he did not shy away from artistic disputes with expert jurors. Time and again, he also commissioned the young artists to rehearse certain works and perform them in concert. These included, for example, Bela Bartók’s rarely played Piano Quintet opus 3, one of his youthful works (1903/04), or one of the two piano quintets that Franz Schmidt had composed for the one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein. Once Brunner had the idea of having Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s two piano trios performed in one evening, and commissioned a young chamber ensemble to prepare the pieces.
Gradually, ORF was able to record more and more concerts by “Musica Juventutis,” which greatly benefited the diversity of the Ö1 radio program. And if Dr. Brunner considered a concert that was not on the ORF’s “wish list” worthy of recording, he made representations to the respective music director. And I can’t remember a time when he didn’t get his way.
After a few years it got to the point where such discussions were unnecessary and we were able to record all the seasonal concerts in the series. And that is still the case today.
On the basis laid at that time twenty-three years ago, everything was able to develop further, so that the cooperation between “Musica Juventutis” and ORF can undoubtedly be called a success story. And this would not have been possible if the two subsequent secretaries general, Christa-Maria Schuster and Viola Wasmuth, had not continued to pursue this goal in an exemplary manner, intensively and persistently.
And today, when I let what has been achieved sink in, I sometimes still see him standing in front of me in the summer of 1995 with his eyes wide open, the Jerger student, dermatologist and bassist Dr. Norbert Brunner.
But since, as is well known, one must never stop at what has been “achieved”, I wish “Musica Juventutis” continuous further development and, above all, wide-open ears and eyes to discover growing, new talents.”

“This not only gives us motivation and recognition, but also gives us the opportunity to get further engagements.
The sponsorship brings us one step closer to life as a professional musician who has to keep up with global competition.
For me, the 2014 concert in the Schubert Hall was my first major performance in a renowned Viennese concert hall. Already in the selection audition, the top-class jury consisting of musicians and music agents got to know me and opened further doors for me. I became a prize winner of the Mozartgemeinde Wien and achieved my solo debut at the Vienna Musikverein and the Liszt Festival Raiding.”
Dr. Thomas Angyan
Director of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. Former Chairman Musica Juventutis
“The search for talent and its consistent promotion has made this institution its mission. As a result, today there is hardly a biography of an important Austrian musician in which the performance of a concert at Musics Juventutis was missing !!!”
Angelika Möser
Artistic director of RSO Vienna, Board and jury member Musica Juventutis
“Musica Juventutis” and “Jeunesse Musicale” are linked not only by the concept of youth in their names, but also by their efforts to contribute to the promotion of young musicians in a responsible and sustainable way. Especially the entry into professional life, the beginning of a career, is one of the biggest hurdles young artists have to overcome. Even during my time as an employee of the Konzerthaus, I was able to follow the activities of Musica Juventutis with admiration. At the latest since my work at Jeunesse, I have not only been aware of the difficulties involved in promoting young talent, but also of the great joy and fulfillment when these efforts are crowned by the success of the artists.
Musica Juventutis can point with great pride to many prominent names today whose entry into professional life was made easier thanks to this initiative.”
Ernst Haupt Stummer
Former President Musica Juventutis Member of the Senate of the Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft
This was King’s idea. This led to the founding of a branch of the Konzerthausgesellschaft, the “Musica Juventutis”.
This form of support for Austrian musical youth was a novelty and has proved its worth over the past 35 years up to the present day.
Dr. Brunner actively built up this association himself and supervised it together with an employee of the Konzerthaus, Mrs. Kortus.
When Dr. Brunner became very ill and could no longer do the extensive work for the association himself, Mrs. Christa Schuster agreed to take over his agendas as Secretary General. Dr. Brunner was then president of the association. Mrs. Schuster was an outstanding, highly committed secretary general who led “Musica Juventutis” to further heights. When Dr. Brunner died, I, then vice-president of the Konzerthausgesellschaft, was asked to take over the presidency of “Musica Juventutis”. When I reached the age limit for members of the board of directors of the Konzerthausgesellschaft, I asked Mr. Burkhard Gantenbein, also vice president of the Konzerthausgesellschaft, to take over the presidency. In the meantime, Mrs. Christa Schuster, after many years of successful work for the Society, wanted to retire from the function of Secretary General. Burkhard Gantenbein now had to find a replacement for Mrs. Schuster. He succeeded excellently: Mrs. Viola Wasmuth and Mrs. Eva Bernhard are now in charge of the “Musica Juventutis” with much verve and great success. In such good hands, this association will continue to make an important contribution to the Konzerthaus and the Viennese music world.”
Mag. Veronica Kaup-Hasler
Executive City Councilor for Culture and Science
“35 years of Musica Juventutis – a proud age for an initiative that is so passionate about promoting the next generation of musicians.
It is especially nice when the artistic work of young musicians can rely on a tradition.
And this tradition has its strength in the alliance between two parties, the Wiener Konzerthaus and the association Musica Juventutis, no actually three. The ORF also stands aside and regularly strengthens the presence of artistic creation. I am convinced that these partnerships are a very important key to success, or better, provide a secure platform on which to jump high. Musical brilliance, talent, as it is so light-heartedly called, needs that – absolutely.
But my admiration goes to the musicians! This alertness to focus one’s own skills for the moment; the courage it takes to bundle the many different abilities within oneself, that remains exceptional in our society, is outstanding in the literal sense and important to see and hear.”
Angelika Kirchschlager

“Musica Juventutis has been with me from the beginning and was one of the first to have confidence in me, at a time when no one but my singing teacher knew that I could sing. In the Schubert Hall I had one of my first professional performances, and I will never forget all the positive energy that was given to me, at a time when it was not easy even for me to believe in myself. Musica Juventutis is a wonderful institution for everyone involved, both in the auditorium and on stage. I wish the audience and the artists many more exciting, fulfilling years full of discoveries.
Thank you Musica Juventutis and all the best!”

“It’s a great concept to give young musicians the opportunity to gain their first experience in one of the most internationally renowned music houses.
It was wonderful to stand on the stage of the Schubert Hall as a 20-year-old and get acquainted with the feeling of being a soloist.
Through Musica Juventutis, you also get to know some dazzling musicians of the same generation and possibly find each other afterwards for joint projects.
That’s how I met bassist Dominik Wagner during my performance, whom I now count among my closest friends and valued chamber music partners.”
